Celebrating Family Caregivers
In the midst of planning for the holidays, we take time in the month of November to acknowledge those who dedicate their time to care for others in their lives. The hidden heroes who, despite the lack of acknowledgement, dedicate their time, energy, and love to being a family caregiver. These hidden heroes can be parents, spouses, neighbors, friends, and children who juggle providing care on top of everything else in their lives.
This month is more than just the kickoff to the holiday season; it’s a reminder. A reminder to show our love and appreciation to all those hidden heroes. A chance to celebrate the compassion, perseverance, and strength that family caregivers show those around them every day.
Why Family Caregiver Appreciation Month Matters
In the United States alone there is approximately 63 million family caregivers that provide some form of essential care for another individual close to them (AARP & National Alliance for Caregiving, 2025). Many of these caregivers face real challenges such as physical exhaustion, emotional strain, financial pressure, and the lack of personal time that often comes with being a family caregiver.
Family caregivers often put their own health, careers, and personal goals on hold to be able to provide the best care possible to their loved ones. On top of this, the isolation they might experience can be profound. Caregiving can be a lonely journey that can feel like they're navigating uncharted waters without a map or support system.
That’s why National Family Caregivers Month matters. It’s more than a “thank you.” It’s an invitation to recognize the caregivers around us, acknowledge their challenges, offer support, and encourage them to make space for themselves and their own well-being.

Ways to Support the Caregivers in your life
If you know a family caregiver, November is the perfect time to reach out. Your gesture doesn't need to be grand - sometimes the smallest acts of recognition mean the most. Here are some simple ways you can offer the caregivers in your life support:
-
Offer to sit with their loved one so they can take a break.
-
Drop off a meal.
-
Simply send a message letting them know you see their efforts and appreciate them.
-
Ask what they need and then follow through.
Providing the Same Care to Yourself
For caregivers, reading this: November is your month too. Not just to be honored by others, but to honor yourself for everything you're carrying. The truth is, caregiving is physically exhausting, emotionally draining, and often feels thankless. But it's also an act of profound love.
This month, give yourself permission to do what you might not often do:
-
Give yourself time to rest and recharge
-
Ask for help from those around you
-
Consider hiring outside caregiving help
-
Schedule time to spend time with friends and family
You cannot pour from an empty cup, and caring for yourself isn't selfish; it's the building blocks that make caregiving possible. You deserve care and support, too.
Final Thoughts
This November, let’s take time to honor the people who give so much of themselves without ever asking for recognition. National Family Caregivers Month is a reminder to shine a light on their commitment and the impact they make every day.
Whether it’s offering support to a caregiver in your life, sharing a meaningful thank you, or helping raise awareness in your community, every gesture matters. Let’s show caregivers the same care and appreciation they pour into others and remind them just how valued they truly are.
